Have you seen Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative’s latest case study on SMUD, “Engaging Customers Through a One-Stop Digital Platform”? The case study details how SMUD recognized that digitally connected families were one of their largest and fastest growing segments–a perfect fit for a marketplace product. Instead of developing a marketplace on their own, they took a truly customer-centric approach and asked customers what features they’d like to have and even had them help select the vendor!

SMUD customers are able to sign into the SMUD Energy Store with their MyAccount credentials. The best part is that after they sign in, they see instantly applied rebates–eliminating the need for mail-in rebates. One of the most requested features from their customers was the ability to schedule services with local contractors, so SMUD enabled customers to connect directly with approved contractors on the site.

As a result of these and other efforts, SMUD had 500,000 site visitors, sold more than $3 million in gross product, and sold 35,000 items–all while maintaining their status as a trusted energy advisor. Read more about SMUD’s Marketplace here
