Avengers: Endgame opened on April 24, 2019 to rave reviews and record-setting ticket sales. Its $1.2B opening weekend was the largest in movie history – both domestic and worldwide.

Gravy data engineer Paul E. decided to look at foot traffic at movie theaters across the U.S. to see what exactly the impact was of Avengers: Endgame on theater visits. Here’s what he saw:

Daily foot traffic at movie theaters jumped by 90%(!) opening weekend, when compared with the weekend prior.

Thursday opening nights are busy, but not as busy as Friday or Saturday during opening weekend.

Visits on opening night were 76% higher than the previous Thursday, but even more people waited the extra day or two to hit the theater on Friday or Saturday.

Movie theater foot traffic quickly fell back to normal levels.

Foot traffic remained slightly higher the following weekend, but returned to pre-release levels within 14 days.

As of May 29th, 2019, Avengers: Endgame topped $806M in ticket sales domestically, and $2.6B worldwide, making it one of the biggest movie hits of all time.
