How to shape organizational culture for the next generation of employees

In the dynamic and constantly changing world of business prosperity increasingly hinges on the capacity to attract and maintain top-tier talent. Notably, Generation Z, often simply referred to as Gen Z, is swiftly emerging as one of the most strategic investments that companies can pursue.

This is where the importance of cultivating and adapting organizational culture becomes evident. Organizational culture encompasses an array of values and serves as the fundamental cornerstone for effectively attracting and retaining Gen Z talent.

Projections indicate that by 2025, Generation Z will make up approximately 27 percent of the workforce. Born from the late 1990s to the early 2010s, Gen Z members have an innate and instinctive grasp of the digital realm, with more than 80% expressing a strong desire to work with cutting-edge technology.

In my latest Forbes article, I look at the boxes that organizations need to tick in order to cultivate a culture that resonates with the next generation of employees:

1. Lean Into A.I. With Positivity

Generation Z individuals view A.I. as a beneficial force that is currently assisting them in time-saving and skill enhancement. Given this perspective, organizations that resist A.I.’s organic integration into the workplace may find it challenging to engage and inspire Gen Z talent.

Instead, businesses should actively embrace A.I. and openly recognize its influence on their respective industries.

  1. Celebrate & Drive Employee Experience

In light of the diverse working needs of employees, companies need to ensure that their organizational culture offers encouragement, recognition, and inspiration to their workforce, whether they work on-site or remotely. Striking a balance between these two realms is vital, especially for Generation Z, who anticipate the flexibility to work in a manner that suits their convenience.

  1. Employ A Nordic Approach To Trust

To foster the well-being of their employees, organizations must establish and sustain a culture centered on trust. Although it can be challenging to quantify, the Nordic nations, including Finland, have consistently received acclaim for their nurturing and dependable business environment.

In these societies, trust holds significant importance, and reliability is a quality instilled from an early age. Transposing this same principle into the corporate context offers numerous benefits. In particular, it cultivates a workplace culture where employees actively support one another.

In summary, the cultivation of organizational culture plays a pivotal role in both attracting the upcoming generation of talent and retaining existing employees. With the workforce primarily consisting of millennials and Generation Z, organizational culture holds immense significance in their decision-making process regarding where to work and whether to stay. In the fiercely competitive talent arena of today, organizations that give prominence to shaping and nurturing their culture not only have the potential to draw in top-tier talent but also to retain them. This strategic focus positions them for sustained success in a rapidly evolving world.
